Can Liverpool win the League?
Liverpool have made a great start to the season and are now the bookies second favourite to win the league. But are we really in a position to be challenging for the title or are the odds just a response to optimistic Liverpool fans having a bet on it after a few good results?
Lets look at the stats: We've got 7 points out of 9 from away trips to the 3 big teams in London and 13 points out of a possible 18 so far.
This is all well and good but from the corresponding fixtures last year we had only 2 points less with 11 points out of a possible 18. Considering we finished 8th last year, it's going to take more consistency before we can be considered real contenders.
In actual fact, no one can predict how the League will turn out after just 6 games. We take a look at some of the reasons Liverpool might be able to win the League, as well as some reasons why we might not.
Reasons Liverpool can win the League:
Everyone loves Jurgen Klopp. He inspires confidence in the players and passion in the fans. His will to win and his tactical knowledge could be key if LFC are to challenge for the title. There are plenty of big managers in the Premier League now with Guardiola, Conte and Mourinho at United but Klopp has an advantage over all these. 8 months of it. He's already experienced half a season with Liverpool and the Premier League, Guardiola and Conte are brand new to the league and Mourinho is at a brand new club. This extra bit of experience could make all the difference in a tight league.
Liverpool are scoring goals, and lots of them. The fantastic thing about these goals is that they are coming from all over the pitch. We don't have a star man getting all the goals who we'd miss if they were injured or suspended. We've got Coutinho, Mane, Lallana, Firmino, Origi, Sturridge all banging in goals. There's goal threats from Henderson, Wijnaldum and even Milner. Teams are going to dread trying to stop all of these players from scoring.
No European Football
Liverpool FC without European football just isn't right. We should be competing with the best in the biggest competitions, but this year that isn't the case. This may well work to our advantage. City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Leicester are all busy in the Champions League whilst United will be distracted by the Europa League. We don't have that distraction. It's no secret that teams tend to struggle and drop points in their first domestic game after European Competition. As the season draws to a close, the extra rest between games could make all the difference.
We spoke about it before Liverpool's first game under the new Main Stand and it will be even more important if we are to mount a serious title challenge. We need to make Anfield a Fortress again. 9 goals in our first 2 games is certainly a great start to this but it's games where we're not at our best that the crowd will really be important. If we can encourage our team to scrape a victory on a bad day rather than getting on their back over the poor performance then we could really challenge for the title.
Reasons Liverpool can't win the League:
⊗ Man City
Man City acquired the services of Pep Guardiola in the summer and some people wondered how he might adapt to a new League. "The Premier League is different!" they said, "He can't expect to win every game like he did with Bayern and Barca" they warned. But he has. 8 games, 8 wins, and Man City are clear favourites to win the title. They don't look like slipping up at this point and even picked up victories without their star man Aguero. For Liverpool to win the league we'll need something to go wrong at City. Hopefully an LFC victory against them like last season can contribute to this!
Yes, we're scoring goals, but we're also conceding them. After 6 games in the league we're yet to keep a clean sheet. This will need to change if we're to challenge for the title. We can't rely on simply outscoring the other team every week. It was the downfall in our title challenge in 2103/14 where we conceded 13 more goals that eventual Champions Man City. We've already conceded 4 more than them this season. Things have started to look more positive in the defence department lately with the signing of Matip and the resurgence in form of Lovren. Hopefully they can form a solid partnership at the back for us.
Last year Liverpool had a habit of beating the big teams but struggling in the games we were expected to win. There have been signs of this already this season where we put 4 past Arsenal at the Emirates but lost to Burnley a week later. Consistency is key for any successful side and it is something Liverpool have lacked for some time. There have been signs lately that we can start winning these games again with 2 convincing wins against "lesser" opponents in the EFL Cup as well as last weeks victory over Hull. If we can keep this up then we have every chance of challenging for the title this year.
